We decided to give the Florida Gulf a try this year instead of our usual beach spot in North Carolina. We'd read and heard many good things about the Destin area and settled on a house in Blue Mountain Beach, right along the popular highway, 30A.
Because we had 14 hours in front of us, we decided to drive through the night in hopes that Mason and Micah would sleep for a majority of the trip. We arrived at the rest area/welcome center in Elkmont, Alabama just before 7:00am and enjoyed walking around and looking at the Saturn 1B rocket. Both boys slept well in the car, only waking up when we stopped for gas around 4:00am, and going back to sleep quickly.
Mason loved running around the sidewalk, chasing daddy and Micah.

Brian was glad it worked out to stop at this particular rest area so we could see this retired rocket.
First time in Alabama!
We went through a drive-thru for breakfast and coffee and kept on driving. Micah did really well and took another nap mid-morning.
Mason is a good traveler, but having movies on the iPad makes the long drive much more bearable for him!
We made it to Florida! Just a few hours to go!
Alright, it's starting to get long now! Brian was trying his best to keep both boys entertained and happy, so FaceTimed me and we had fun laughing and being silly. You can see his big white foot near my head at the top of the picture!
We made it to our house a little after 2:00pm! The cleaning crew was just finishing up as we arrived, so we were able to get in a little early!
Happy with our home for the week! We borrowed my aunt's van and my mom drove with us and Joel flew in the next day. My dad wasn't able to find coverage for his farm work, so he (sadly!!) couldn't come. We often found ourselves saying how much we wished he was along, and how he would have loved the beach and the water.

No afternoon nap combined with warm weather and a walk home from the beach makes for a good time to catch a late afternoon nap!
After spending a little time at the beach, we went to the grocery store and then got take out BBQ for supper. M&M enjoyed driving the van as daddy waited in the restaurant for our food to be ready.
Back home with our tasty food for supper! A successful first day of vacation!
